Whitby Area Scout Trucks
Congratulations to Brandon (13th Whitby) on his 3rd place finish in the Scout Truck - Design category at the Whitby Area Scout Trucks competition held at Iroquois Park. 3rd place is like winning a Bronze Medal at the Olympics. Over 40 trucks were entered by Scouts from Whitby, Port Perry, and Cannington. Attached are a couple of pictures from the event.
Thanks to all that participated and cheered on all the scouts. Here are a couple of Scout Truck pictures of the event.
Survivor Camp and Beaver Activity Day
On February 12-14 at Camp Samac the Cubs held a survivor weekend. The cubs were split into two team Mogo and Team Sambura. They competed in various survivor challenges from the dance off, to answering challenge question, to the obstacle course which the Beavers participated in. On Sunday the cubs were off to the Archery Range to test their survivor skill in range practice . Each team had head bands to identify themselves and tribal necklaces hand crafted by Scouter Stacey. There was also the immunity idol which changed hands frequently all weekend.
The 10 Beavers started out the day by making bird feeders out of plastic bottles. These were hung outside to assist our feathered friend in surviving the winter. We then took a hike and tested some of our senses. We listened (to the plane overhead) smelled the scent of the pine trees, slipped on the ice in the parking lot, and identified a number of the trees and talked about how the animals survive in winter. The beavers then created Candy Mountain or Rainbow mountain with coloured water on the snow.
Lunch was filling. The cubs made the beavers small pizza’s and tooty beans.
After lunch each beaver was given a mouse house to go and bury in the field. The object was that if the mouse in his house were buried safely to survive the winter cold then the liquid in side would not freeze. We went back two hours later to retrieve our mouse houses and not one had frozen. Congratulation Beavers!!!
Beavers were then paired off with the cubs on either team. The first challenge was the rope challenge where the pairs were required to negotiate a rope course. They were arm linked a attached to the rope with a carabineer. This was a timed challenge.
Next skill challenge was to retrieve the injured beaver by stretcher and transport them via sleigh to a predetermined location. This was run as a relay. There were some very bumpy rides.
Snack had to be searched for using a GPS to find the treasure chest.
Next was the obstacle course to test out their fitness survivor skills. They had to go under the table, curve about the orange cones, fire the slingshot dog bone at the target, over the wall and across the balance beam retrieving oversized tennis nuts.
A well deserved dinner was served by the kitchen staff consisting of corn, ground beef and macaroni, and yummy veggies.
We dressed again and went out to the campfire to sing songs while the banana’s with chocolate cooked over the flames.
Ten tired Beavers then left at around 8 and calm settled over the cabin. The cubs scattered to their various dens to tell ghost stories or talk.
Have a look at our Camp pictures to see how much fun we had.

Start Your Engines - Polish your Tails
Beavers enjoyed making a participating the the Beaver Buggy Night February 2 sponsored by Oshawa. Thank you to Oshawa for a great event. Thank you to the parents who helped assemble the buggies and to the Beavers who were extremely creative. My favorite race was when all the buggies went down in three lines with some on their backs and others on their tails or fronts. You never know the tricks your beavers can do. Congratulations to all the participants.
Check out our Beaver Buggy fun.
